Lake Erie has the power to quickly turn an afternoon at the beach into a tragedy.
From the pages of The Geneva Free Press and other resources, here is an impartial list of deaths at the resort:
June 28, 1945: Fred Christy, 32, of West Homestead, Pa.
July 7, 1945: Geneva girls, Patricia Ann Wilson, 10, and Jacqueline Carter, 9, drown off Mapleton Beach in rough water and strong undertow.
July 7, 1945: Bernice Lynch, 21, and Jean Beech, go under the water but are rescued and revived using artificial resuscitation.
July 25, 1958: Larry B. Proctor of Ashtabula, 27, drowned off Korabeck’s Beach after eating lunch.
