Geneva Winery

Operated by Anthony T. Fortunato, the Geneva Winery was located on Route 84.

Fortunato acquired the winery in 1939; he came to the business from New York and had more than 25 years experience.

The winery’s annual production was 250,000 gallons in 1946. All of the fruit used in the wine production were grown in the area.

The winery’s best business was in dessert wines, which wine buyers seemed to prefer over the table wines.

Workers included chemist Eric Townsend who previously operated a winery in France and Ernest Toth, the “head man.”

Toth was a World War II veteran having served 20 months overseas and in the infantry division.

Fortunato and his wife Eugenia lived at Madison-on-the-Lake.
